The office cubicle
The office cubicle:
I wanted to write about this for quite a long time. I have expressed this to a few of my friends also.
Have you visited US for work? What was the size of the cubicle you used to sit? Was it independent? Did you have enough privacy? Did you have enough space to keep your things? Did the phone have answering machine? And so many questions like this!
The answer to most of these questions is Yes or positive. Now change the location to India and you will realize that the answer is No or negative. Why? Do we realize that out of 24 hours of a day, we spend most of our time in the office and that too in our 4ft X 4ft Cubicle? If we sleep for 8 hours, then we have 16 hours! And out of 16 hours if we spend 10 to 12 hrs in office, then we are spending 62% to 75% of our time in that 16 sq ft place.
Now let me ask a few more questions. Do you have any decorative stuff in your cubicle? Do you have any photographs (of your family or God or something else) at your cubicle? Do you have an extra chair for someone (colleague only) who visits you? Do you have a rack to keep some documents/files/papers? Do you have a table tray where you can keep pens, pencils, post-its, stapler, punching machine etc? I know, again the answer is negative.
If you compare the expenditure, it is much lesser as compared to that of in any foreign country, especially US. Where as the output by the employee is equally competent. All these things can be easily provided without spending much. But, how many of us know it? How many of us realize it? How many of us really want a pleasant and a relaxed working environment? Can we do something or anything about it?

Thats a good observation and YES, one should take little effort to keep ones workplace pleasant!
Why to decorate/personify your workplace?
Why does one needs to get emotionally attached to workplace/company?
It's just plain business, buddy!
Nothing more, nothing less!
You have essential things to carry out your work, that's what a company wants & provides, anything extra is eating into their profits, isnt' it?
I defer! Decorate and personify your workspace is for yourself. You feel pleasant about the environment and that helps in a lot of ways! No company stops on only essential things. Why do they organize picnics, dinner parties, entertainment events, outings, trainings, family gatherings etc? Because these companies are interested in the employees. As a matter of fact, I have been told that there are a few companies in India who provide bigger space.
And yes, you should be emotionally attached to your workspace. Comeon, then, if a person is staying in a rented house, then you will say that he shouldn't have any decorative stuff at his place? He shouldn't have any useful stuff?
There are two different points. One, the space! Here company comes into picture and other is decorative stuff. Here your interest comes into picture.
Its not the workspace, but general lifestyle! How do you want your surrounding to be!
Yes Viv, I do have the same cube in India too, with enough privacy, answering machine, place for stationery and pictures and awards that I have decorated to give it a personal touch. Do visit my place when I am back to India. Afterall it is where I spend most of my day, rite?

Luckly for all the Q the answer is S in our company in Pune.
All about making cubical plesant is a right move.
But the missing point is
U must also direct ur thoughts in direction to reduce the time spend in the cubicals if possible.
